Here’s a simple recipe of one of my favourite breakfasts and snacks. When I can’t get hold of fresh figs, I use a smear of delicious fig jam…Not quite the same as the squidgy fresh kind but I’ve got to sustain this addiction somehow! I can’t get enough of Neufchâtel cheese – it might be my favourite thing about living in France.

Determine how much honey you need by tasting a fig for its sweetness first.


  • bread of your choice, I’ve used rye bread here

  • neufchâtel cheese

  • fresh ripe figs

  • walnut oil

  • runny honey

  • sea salt


  • Toast your bread and spread it liberally with Neufchâtel cheese. Top with sliced figs, a drizzle of walnut oil and honey. Season to taste.
